Ever hear of Pythagoras, the man who brought us geometry? We'll look to see how geometric shapes are the base of our visual world. Then, we'll analyze and draw all kinds of three-dimensional shapes: spheres, cubes, tetrahedrons, cones and cylinders, using pencils and shading. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, November 6, 2007
There's a story that says the Greek goddess Demeter is the cause of the change of seasons. We'll hear about her, then draw the wonderful things that are harvested in the season of autumn. Colored pencils are the tools, with specially tinted paper. We'll learn the techniques we need to make things look real. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, December 4, 2007
If you haven't heard of Pandora and her box, you'll know her very well by the end of this class. With colorful holiday paper, we plan to repeat last year's class on making an origami box. An hour-and-a-half is needed for this class, and it will be full of surprises. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, February 5, 2008
Phaeton thought because he was the son of the Sun, he could handle any responsibility, however dangerous. We understand, like Phaeton, especially in February, how wonderful the sun and its shadows can be. We'll study how to draw shadows, using a variety of types of graphite pencils and textured paper. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 (third Tuesday of the month)
Arachne, the spinner changed into a spider, knew the importance of a single, spun line. In this class, we will work with the usefulness of a line of ink. We'll practice varying the width of your line to make your drawing more interesting and create depth in your composition. Lean how to use stipple and cross-hatching techniques to create shadow and contrast in your work. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Pegasus, the horse who could fly, is the inspiration for this class. We'll use the techniques of transferring a sketch before creating the final piece in colored pencil, perfect for drawing mythological beasts. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
Icarus and his father Daedalus were a pretty creative pair. Though some thin markers are just ordinary, and could hardly be called artists' tools, today we'll use markers in a way to make Daedalus proud - on special paper designed for the comic strip artist. You'll experiment with bold and bubble lettering to make your own comic strip. There is a $2 fee for materials.
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
"Illusion" is the theme of this class. After hearing about Athena, the guide of craftsmen and the protectress of the city of Athens, we'll draft an outdoor sketch of scenes of - not Athens - but Palmyra! We'll learn how to create the illusion of depth and space, and how to place a horizon in your pictures. Charcoal pencils, drawing boards and plain paper will be our tools. There is a $2 fee for materials.
